Nice thing to do to a "Addison"service dog in the middle of recovering from major surgery!I hope my friends will see that the service they give is all about the money now to pay for the remodeling they have done and not for the animals!The last trip there they where to remove staples and when i got home an hour away i found that they left a staple half in the wound!It would have been a bad thing if he swallowed it!They have destroyed a wonderful service dog and made my life much harder being disabled!Any advice you can send to me that may help,I would be most grateful!Now i have to find a new vet in the middle of all this now!Contact me at 72656@comcast.net

Broken Plates and Screws!

Almost lost Corey to an infection on 1/09/2012 from the Metal Plates in his leg!Corey had a fever over 107 degree's so XRAYS were taken and they showed that the front plate was broken! Once the fever was reduced the plates were removed! 5 screw's were left behind in the bone where they broke off!So even after all the surgery there is still a chance for the infection to return to the same area!

Just got Corey home.

Still no improvement with NEO.I had to wrap his back feet up because they are getting raw from him dragging them.We did find out that we could have a ct scan done for 5,000 dollars but its unlikely that we can raise that kind of money!Then if he needed surgery that would be several more thousands of dollars and even then the out come is unknown!
NEO'S out look of all this is .whats going on,whats all the fussing over me for?
Its like the fromt half is still like it always was but the back half is dying!
On his xrays the spine look very bad, but the hip joints looked great!What can we do but try to make NEO as happy as we can until his time comes to an end.

Bad new for NEO!
NEO woke up yesterday paralyzed from the chest down from several bad discs in the middle of his spine!
The out come is not looking good at all!
We will see if he improves over the weekend,if not it may be time to say goodbye to a great buddy and pal to me and Corey but mostly difficult and heart felt for Neil as he is his constant companion.NEO will leave a legacy of beautiful pups he sired with NIKKI!
Those of you that know Neo will remember him as a noble giant with a heart of gold!
Please pray for NEO we need a miracle!

Took Corey to the vets to weigh him and he was 85.5 pounds.So we took a ride up to the mountians to give him a change of pace!

Corey is at his ideal weight of 90 pounds!!!Thats over 40 pounds lost!
Corey had his 3.2mg injection of percorten on the 13Th of August
and is still on 5mg of prednisone per day.
I have been taking Corey swimming every other day,I still can't walk him on the tar for long because he drags his toe nails and they wear down,but he can run on grass and walk on floors okay.It's good to have a some what normal life again!

Corey went to the vets at 11:10am for a check up and had his Lyme and DHLP + Parvo vaccination.
Corey is doing great on his diet, he weighed in at
93.5 pounds!!!

He was at one time over 130 pounds!!!
and is on 3.2 ml of percorten-v instead of 4.5 ml!
We are going to get him down to 90 pounds then start balancing his meds.
Its great when you have people that help and cooperate with you when you have a dog that has weight and health issues!

Daisy is staying over again.
She really hasn't recovered from the attack that happened at doggy daycare,her right front leg still has an opened wound and one of her ears flops over.Daisy has had several reconstructive surgery's and may be having another soon.I must say the attack was much more brutal than i had thought and the trauma has effected her mentally and physically and im surpised that she can even walk!I will post some photo's later.

I took corey to see doctor clark because corey had blood in his urine,Doctor Clark found that he had a fever of 105 degress,Corey is on Cipofloxacin and Cethanechol.Corey is doing better now, but what a scare he gave us!

Corey and I have had a big set back one of the screws broke and another two were getting loose so Corey went back in for surgery and they were repaired but the broken screw is still in the bone and another metal plate was added with 6 more screws.Thats a total of 16 screws in my best friends leg now.I wish it was me instead of him!I can't stand to see him in such pain.Your prayers for him are welcome.

Today I went to meet the nice people at Handicapped pets and picked up Corey's new splint which i hope he will be wearing after his XRAYS tomorrow.The splint is well made and looks comfy too.

Corey is off the Antibiotic's and is feeling better.
Now i have to keep telling him to slow down so he doesn't trip and fall.
I have been changing Corey's splint and have been getting good at it.
Corey is looking good now that he has lost over 25 pounds of excess fat.
Time for me to lose some weight too! LOL!

Corey and I went to do some shopping.
It was more for Corey so he could get out and see some people. As soon as we walked in I heard people saying awwww poor dog! Then two small children came over and gave him a hug I said your not suppose to pat him because he is a working dog. Then came the questions!
Why does he have that on his leg? Why does he have that vest on? So I stopped and talked to them and explained why! They took it all in like it was a school lesson that they may get tested on later. They seemed to enjoy it very much.
Later in the freezer section a man thought maybe he was a police dog that had been
hurt on duty.
I think Corey enjoyed looking around and watching all the different people. Corey was glad to get out of the house after almost two months.

Corey is still having lots of pain. Corey crys a lot at night and some times I will sleep with him on the floor to try and help him cope with the pain! On 08-25-2008 Corey went outside and started vomiting. That scared me so I took his temperature which was 103.5. So I immediately went to the emergency clinic! They gave Corey his medications by injection. They also checked his electrolytes which showed he was a little dehydrated. Corey also got some IV fluids. It wasn't a Addison's' crisis Corey was just hurting, and not feeling well. They also put a new pain patch on him. Anyway, $608.00 of well spent money we headed back home! The next day Corey was still feeling ill. Corey didn't urinated when I let him out. Later that day Corey still hadn't urinated, So we headed out once again to see his regular vet. They gave him some more fluid's, and around 5pm he finally urinated. Today Corey still cried from the pain, but at least Corey is drinking and eating.

I took Corey to the Vets this morning at 7:30 am. It rained the whole time I was driving! The weather was gloomy like the way my heart felt as I drove home with out him!

As of 8 pm Corey's has gone through the surgery with no unexpected problems!!!

I stopped and took a breath and did some research about what will happen with Corey's wrist.
it's called arthrodesis.he will be going in this Tuesday that Will put him in 11 days of his percorten-v cycle,that will be almost half way!
they will put him under anesthesia and take more x-rays then he will go for surgery!
he will have a arthrodesis bone plate 2.7/3.5 held in place with nine 3.5 mm bone screws!Hopefully he will be home in a few days.the big worry is the Addison's disease,it could take him twice as long to recover.my stomach is in knots just thinking about what could happen.we will just take it a day at time!

Bad News/Good News???

well now it has been very stressful since my last post!
Yesterday Corey went to the vets again to have his wrist looked at and had all his shots and blood test for heart worm and Lyme disease. all negative!
bad news is his wrist, he still is limping and hyper extending the wrist joint!
So i was referred to see a surgeon at the emergency clinic and today i took him there, Good News he weighed 116 pounds and Bad News it looks like the damage is from torn ligaments.now Corey will be having a metal plate with screws put in and having the joint fused permanently for 3,000 dollars not what i wanted to hear! it will give him a better quality of life in the long run but he will no longer be able to bend his wrist!
surgery is one word you don't want to hear when you have a dog with Addison's disease.
I will update when it starts happening.

I Went to the hospital today to see a specialist for the nerve damage in my neck,Next i will be going to get another MRI!
i hate those things it feels like getting buried alive.
then i will be getting another test called EMG?
they use needles and send electric shocks to see how bad the damage is.
Doctor said it isnt a pleasnt test!But anuf about me........
I stopped to get Corey's percorten-V at the vets
(Corey's weight was 117 pounds....YEAH!),
I gave him his shot when i got back home,
He still is limping very badly and has a hugh knot on the outside of his wrist we will be seeing his vet next week!It may be time to retire him???
on a lighter note Nikki is doing great from her surgery!!!

Daisy is a great friend to the other dogs here and we were shocked to hear that
Daisy was very badly hurt at the doggy daycare by another male dog there,she still is in the vets and will need many surgerys!

Today was a busy day,first Nikki went in to have surgery!then i had to go to see my doctor because of some wicked pain Ive been having in my neck!Corey was suppose to have his splint taken off today,but he already did that him self!Corey is still limping,so between me and the dogs the only place we have been going to is the vets or to the doctors.This afternoon i will go pick Nikki up from the vets,I know Corey misses her already.I spent my birthday in bed with ice packs on my neck.Hope Corey and i start feeling a little better so we can go out for a walk up waterville valley and get some fresh mountain air!

Corey is out of his splint his foot was staying to wet with all the rain lately and he started chewing on the end of the bandage!Good news is the swelling is down but he is still limping.im trying heat wraps to see if that helps.

Corey was xrayed again,and it still looks like a very bad sprained wrist!He is now in a temporary cast for the next week or so.we also weighed him and he was a whopping 130 pounds!!!think allot of the weigh is because of the increase of prednisolone,but we are checking on his thyroids to see if that is part of the problem.So the plan now is to get him down to 105 pounds!I will cut back on the prednisolone and will be giving him SLENTROL (DIRLOPIDE) to help with his appetite.When he can walk again he will be able to play and run around and chase butterflys that should help burn off the fat to!

Corey will be going to the vet saturday july 19th to see what the status is of his right wrist injury is,he still is limping very badly but does'nt cry out in pain.when he first fell i had never heard him scream out in pain as he did in the 5 plus years that we have been working together!his head injury is okay accept for 2 small scars under his nose and one on the edge of his eye.he is taking 20 mg of prednislone and no pain meds

Corey went to see the vet today!They tripled his pain medications and he will stay on a high dose of prednisone for now!
If the swelling doesn't go down in a few days he will have to get some more X-rays to see if any bone chips got in between the joint!
Plus he got his PERCORTEN-V injection for the Addison's disease today.
Id like to thank those of you that were able to help out with some of his bills,every little bit helps.

Corey got his injection on august 20 2007 and got it under the skin instead of in the muscle.he lost some weight and is down to 111 pounds!So far he seems to be doing good and is still on 2 1/2 mg of prednisolone.his electrolytes were with in range.

We made it thru the april floods,it was the worst ive seen here!

On may 7 2007 Corey will be getting injections at 155.00 per vial instead of pills for the Addison's,and i am praying that this will keep him more stable then the roller coaster ride we have been on since he crashed!
I also signed Corey and I up for the blind awareness walk - Saturday,June 2 2007 in Concord New Hampshire and will be walking with the Dog Guide Users Group,This will be our 3rd year and i hope Corey will be up for the walk!

Corey was dx with Addison's,he had a fever this week but that has gone down and he is doing better at least the blood work Say's so!i know he has a long way to go!
he still has muscle twitches and doesn't have as much energy,it seems as if some one took 10 years off his life and his personality has changed!

Encyclopedia of Canine Veterinary Medical Information

Addison's disease (Hypoadrenocorticism)

Addison's disease is also known as hypoadrenocorticism. It is an insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. Since these hormones are essential for life, this is an extremely serious disease and it must be treated as such.

Adrenal insufficiency can be primary or secondary. Primary adrenocorticism affects salt/potassium balance in the body and glucorticoid as well. Secondary adrenocorticism usually only affects the glucocorticoids. It is not known why primary adrenocorticism occurs but it may be an immune mediated process. Secondary adrenocorticism probably occurs most often when prednisone or other cortisone being administered for medical reasons are suddenly withdrawn. It can occur as a result of pituitary cancer or some other process that interferes with production of hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands.

Most dogs with Addison's disease initially have gastrointestinal disturbances like vomiting. Lethargy it also a common early sign. Poor appetite can occur as well. These are pretty vague signs and it is extremely easy to miss this disease. More severe signs occur when a dog with hypoadrenocorticism is stressed or when potassium levels get high enough to interfere with heart function. Dogs with this problem will sometimes suffer severe shock symptoms when stressed, which can lead to a rapid death. When potassium levels get high heart arrythmias occur or even heart stoppage which also is fatal. In some cases, especially secondary Addison's disease, there are no detectable electrolyte changes.

This disease can be picked up by changes in the ratio between sodium or potassium by accident at times. When this happens it is still extremely important to treat for it. It is confirmed by an ACTH response test -- administration of this hormone should stimulate production of adrenal hormones. If this does not occur then hypoadrenocorticism is present. In cases in which the electrolyte levels are normal this is the only test for the problem and it will be missed unless it is looked for specifically. At times this disease can be hard to differentiate from renal failure because the symptoms and even the bloodwork can be similar ---- so the ACTH response test may be necessary to differentiate them.

Treatment for this disease is usually done by oral administration of fludrocortisone acetate (Flurinaf), salting the food, and administration of corticosteroids like prednisone. In a crisis situation this disorder must be treated more aggressively with intravenous fluids, IV glucocorticoids and correction of acid/base balances.

You have to pay close attention to a dog with this problem. Don't ignore any changes in appetite, GI disturbances or anything else that makes you think your dog is ill. If you work with your vet and are careful about following his or her directions this disease has a good prognosis when it is discovered before a crisis occurs.

Cameo's Rescue!

Successful Dog Rescue on Tripoli Road
Posted 05-11-2005 On May 5th at 18:54 the Fire Department received a call for a dog stuck in a drainage culvert. Cameo a five year old German Shepherd "Guide Dog", always concerned for traffic decided to seek an alternative route across Tripoli Road. Cameo was surprised when traffic squeezed to halt. To make matters worse Cameo's transmission would not shift into reverse! There she was stuck in the culvert twenty feet to go and a little upset. We weren't quite sure if she was upset because of her predicament, or that she was now unemployed. Heavy equipment was called in to remove two sections of the cement culvert. Municipal Services Director, Bill Cheney, surgically removed a pile of debris and granite boulders to gain access without disturbing Cameo's air supply. As darkness fell, Cameo emerged quite happy, and unharmed. Assisting Cameo on this rescue were department members; Andy Vermeersch, John Monteiro, Lt.
